Naki

Mohamed Al Naki, Chairman, ARABAL

Mohammed Al Naki founded the Arab International Aluminium Conference in 1981 to establish greater cooperation between leaders in the Arab Aluminium Industry and the global player in the Aluminium Industries. This culminated to hold first ARABAL in 1983 in Kuwait.

Mr. Al Naki was commissioned from both The Military Academy and The Royal School of Military Engineering in the United Kingdom.

During his military career, he was a member of staff in Kuwait Military Academy and second-in-command of Kuwait Army Engineers.

He is an advocate of renewable energy and a life member of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) since 1983.

Mr. Al Naki was awarded the President’s Medal, Lion of Republic of Finland, from the President Martti Ahtisaari in 1996.

He was honored as Senior Citizenship of the Republic of Turkey from the President Tayyip Erdogan in 2010.

Ali Al-Baqali, Acting CEO, Alba

Ali Al Baqali was appointed as the Acting CEO of Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C (Alba) on 01 August 2019.

Al Baqali has been a part of the Alba family for more than two decades and brings years of leadership and honed experience from within the Company. Al Baqali joined Alba as a Purchasing Officer back in 1998 and was appointed as the Manager for Procurement in 2010.

In 2013, Al Baqali became part of Alba’s Executive fold with his appointment as the Chief Financial Officer moving further up the ranks to become Deputy CEO and Chief Supply Chain Officer in 2017. In his Executive Management roles, Al Baqali has been instrumental in the fast-paced progress of Alba’s landmark Line 6 Expansion Project, especially in securing the US$3 billion financing for the Project and formulating sourcing strategies for key raw materials.

As a Bahraini who grew from within Alba, Al Baqali believes that Alba’s growth and success depend heavily on the Company’s entrenched principles on Safety, Development of Human Capital, Social and Civic Responsibility as well as Community Development.

Al Baqali is a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS), UK; Board member of the International Aluminum Institute (IAI), INJAZ and is on the Board of Tenmou, the first Bahraini Business Angels Company. Ali holds a B.Sc. degree in Accounting from the University of Bahrain and an MBA from the French Arabian Business School – ESSEC.

Abdulla J M Kalban, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA)

Abdulla J M Kalban MD & CEO Abdulla Kalban is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside the oil and gas industry.

Abdulla has spent his entire career at EGA and its predecessor companies. He joined as a graduate trainee in 1985. He has played a leading role in the development of EGA from a single regional aluminium smelter into a global aluminium industry leader.

Today EGA’s production makes the UAE the world’s fourth largest aluminium producing nation. Aluminium is the largest made-in-the-UAE export after oil and gas.

Under Abdulla’s leadership, EGA is expanding upstream and internationally, building a bauxite mine and alumina refinery project in the Republic of Guinea and the UAE’s first alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi. EGA now has over 300 customers in more than 60 countries. EGA’s aluminium reaches every inhabited continent, and is part of buildings and products from the Burj Khalifa to BMW cars.

EGA has used its own technology in every expansion in the 1990s and in 2016 became the first UAE industrial company to licence its core industrial process technology internationally. Abdulla leads a team of over 7,500 people at EGA including 1,200 UAE Nationals.

Abdulla was appointed Chief Executive Officer of EGA’s predecessor company Dubai Aluminium in 2005 and President and Chief Executive Officer in 2008. EGA was formed through the merger of Dubai Aluminium and Emirates Aluminium in 2014, and Abdulla was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

He is also the Chairman of the Gulf Aluminium Council, Vice Chairman of the Federal Electricity & Water Authority, and a board member of the International Aluminium Institute, Dubai International Financial Centre, Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University and Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.

Abdulla is a member of committees at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and the Dubai Executive Council Committee for Infrastructure & Environment.

Waleed Tamimi, Chief Administration & Supply Officer, Alba

Waleed Tamimi was appointed Chief Administration & Supply Officer of Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) on 1st August 2019.  Prior to his appointment as the Chief Admin & Supply Officer, he held the position of Chief Administration Officer since September 2017, overseeing the departments of Public Relations, Human Resources, Training, Operational Excellence, and Alba Healthcare Centre.

Prior to his current role, Waleed was the Director of Administration, and before that he was the Senior Manager of Strategic Supply & Planning, charged with controlling the company’s procurement requirement of all major raw material and corresponding logistics. Moreover, Waleed was responsible for the management and development of Alba’s raw material and freight suppliers’ network in addition to managing all trading & selling initiatives for excess procured Alumina and surplus production of Calcined Petroleum Coke.

In 2013, Waleed served as Operational Excellence Manager where he led the operational excellence initiatives alongside the continuous improvement strategy and roadmap. Moreover, Waleed was responsible for the development, establishment and initiation of an Enterprise Continuous Improvement and Cost Cutting Programme (Titan Programme), based on the Lean-Six Sigma methodology. The developed Programme is a company-wide philosophy aimed at improving quality, reducing lead time and bringing in sizable cost reduction levels.

Prior to his roles with Alba, he was General Manager of Business Improvement Group at Rezayat Group of Companies in Khobar, Saudi Arabia where he led a strategy building initiative at Rezayat Group, resulting ultimately in the establishment and direct utilization of Balance Score Cards. He also led the development, establishment and initiation of an Enterprise Excellence Program. The developed system was called Rezayat Achieving Competitive Excellence (RACE) and is a mix of the Six Sigma philosophy, the Lean Manufacturing methodology and Continuous Improvement principles.

Waleed holds an Executive MBA from the French Arabian Business School / ESSEC in addition to a BS and MS degrees in Industrial Engineering from Wichita State University in the USA. He is also a Certified Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing Master Black Belt. Waleed has served for 20 years in different capacities for a number of companies in the USA and in the Middle East ranging from an Implementation Consultant in a software start-up company in San Jose, California to a Six Sigma Black Belt in a world-class Aircraft Manufacturer (Lear-Jet, Bombardier).

In his free time, Waleed enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.

Yousuf Bastaki, Executive Vice President, Upstream Operations, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA)

Yousuf Bastaki has been in charge of Upstream Operations at EGA since 2016. He is also responsible for Capital Projects and Major Materials Procurement.

Mr. Bastaki joined DUBAL in 1985 as a graduate trainee and has since acquired more than 30 years of technical, managerial and leadership experience in the aluminium industry.

Over the years, he has been progressively promoted to senior positions including General Manager Engineering Expansion & Technology Development at DUBAL, Project Director at EMAL for Phase I & Phase II, and Vice President, Projects at EMAL.

Following the formation of EGA, Mr. Bastaki became Senior Vice President, Capital Projects before being promoted to his current role.

Mr. Bastaki holds an Executive MBA from the American University of Sharjah and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colarado, Denver, USA. He has also held several memberships throughout his professional career including Chartered Engineer (UK), Fellow of the International Institute of Engineering and Technology, Project Management Professional from PMI International (USA) and Professional Engineer (EIT).

Mr. Bastaki has also served as a member of the board of editors of both the Quality Review Magazine and the World of Engineering Magazine and as an advisory member of the boards of both the Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering College at UAE University in Al Ain and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Peter Finnimore was appointed Chief Marketing Officer in August 2017, having been Head of Marketing for South32 since May 2015.

Prior to joining South32, Peter held various roles in BHP, starting in The Hague in 2008 as Vice President Marketing Aluminium. He then led the consolidation of the Aluminium and Stainless Steel Materials Marketing teams in August 2012. In 2013, he was appointed South32 Vice President Marketing Aluminium, Manganese & Nickel based out of Singapore. During his career, Peter has worked in various marketing roles in Japan, Australia, Russia, Cyprus and Switzerland, including for Rio Tinto and Rusal.

Peter completed degrees in Commerce and Law at the University of Queensland.

Bill Bihlman founded Aerolytics – a management consultancy – in 2012. Its focus is marketing strategy for aerospace materials, structures and component manufacturing firms. He is a regular conference speaker, including North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Bill started his career in 1995 as an engineer with Raytheon Aircraft. Subsequently, he was Senior Consultant with AeroStrategy.

He is currently a PhD candidate in Industrial Engineering at Purdue University. His research focus is additive manufacturing and the aerospace supply chain. Bill holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, an MBA and MPA from Cornell University. He holds a Green Belt in Six Sigma, and is a licensed private pilot.

Marieke is the Director of Impacts and Partnerships at the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Marieke started working with ASI in January 2019 and she is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of ASI’s impacts and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) program, and supports ASI’s broader organisational partnerships, collaborations and stakeholder engagement. Marieke’s background lies in the development and implementation of standards, certification and impact evaluation systems in mineral and metal supply chains. Previously she worked at the Responsible Jewellery Council where she managed RJC’s certification and M&E work programs. Her most recent role was at Bettercoal, where she led the review and implementation of the new coal supplier Assessment Program. Marieke holds a Masters in Environment, Development and Policy from the University of Sussex and a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Cultural and Social Anthropology from the University of Amsterdam.
